The RGS Econ is looking worldwide for applicants to the PhD program with an excellent academic record and a Master, Diploma or equivalent degree in economics or related fields. Early-stage PhD students are also welcome to apply. The language of the program is English. Hence, a good command of English is a prerequisite.

We offer 5 scholarships for outstanding students. 3 scholarships, sponsored by the Stiftung Mercator , foster research in MIGRATION and INTEGRATION and 2 scholarships, sponsored by CINCH , support research in EMPIRICAL HEALTH ECONOMICS. Please indicate if you are interested in one of the two fields. 3 additional doctoral positions in our graduate school are available. There is no tuitition fee.

You can download the recommendation forms at the "application manual" menu. We strongly recommend that you nominate your referees early. Many referees are busy people and you should afford them as long as possible to write and send their letters.
The Interactive Online Application System replaces previous pdf and printed application forms and requires you to have a valid email address. If you have copies of those forms, please discard them and use the online application process only. If for some reason you cannot use the IOAS, please contact the co-ordinator of RGS Econ. Applications can only be submitted through this online application system. The application system is hosted on a secure server at the Rheinisch-Westfälisches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (RWI).

The application process is divided into a number of steps. In a first step, a registration form must be filled out. You will then automatically obtain a confirmation and a login account on our server. This is the only way in which you will be able to login to and apply to our doctoral program. Applicants do not have to pay an application fee!

Until the end of the application line you can complete your application. You have to fill out an application form and upload some files in a next step. All this can take place in several sessions, but we prefer that the number of submitted files is small. Even after you have uploaded documents, you can change or add files to your application at any time.
With your login account, you will be able to control the quality and correctness of your uploaded files on our system. There is always a possibility to delete files and upload new data. Our online system also allows you to check the status of your application all through the selection process.
