Latvian Government Study Scholarships for International Students in Latvia, 2014/15

Each year, State Education Development Agency (VIAA) offers Latvian Government scholarships for international students from those countries which have signed an agreement or offer scholarships for Latvian students. The amount of the Latvian scholarship for bachelor and master students is EUR 500 per month and for PhD students is EUR 670 per month. Scholarships for bachelor and master studies are granted for a time period up to 10 months (for PhD-students – up to 11 months) except for master`s studies Latvian philology, Latvian literature, Latvian culture and Latvian history which can be granted for two academic years. Application deadline is 1st May 2014 for 2014/2015 academic year.

Study Subject (s): Scholarships are awarded in any subject available at Latvian HEI.
Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing undergraduate, master and PhD degree.

Eligibility: Applications for bachelor`s and the first level of professional higher education studies will be accepted from students who have successfully completed at least one academic year of studies (at their home HEI or at a Latvian HEI if they already have been studying in Latvia) at the moment of application (February, March, April 2014). Only citizens from countries which have signed an Agreement or offer scholarships for Latvian students can apply for the Latvian government scholarships.

Scholarship Open for Students of Following Countries: Citizens from countries which have signed an Agreement (Azerbaijan, Greece, Peru, Belgium (Flanders Community and French Community of Belgium), Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Israel, Portugal, China, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Spain, Cyprus, Republic of Korea, Turkey, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Turkmenistan, Estonia, Mexico, United Kingdom, Finland, Moldova, Uzbekistan, France and Mongolia) or offer scholarships for Latvian students (Austria, Iceland Slovakia, United States of America, Denmark, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Norway and Switzerland) can apply for these Latvian government scholarships.

Scholarship Description: In accordance with bilateral agreements on co-operation in education and science, the State Education Development Agency (VIAA) offers scholarships to students, researchers and teaching staff of several countries for studies, research and participation in summer schools in Latvian higher education institutions (HEIs) in the academic year 2014/2015.

Duration of award(s): Latvian Government Scholarships for bachelor and master studies are granted for a time period up to 10 months (for PhD-students – up to 11 months). Scholarship for masters studies in the study programmes of Latvian philology, Latvian literature, Latvian culture and Latvian history can be granted for two academic years, i.e. for the duration of master`s study programme. If a student wants to continue her/his studies in Latvia for one more year, she/he has to apply for the Latvian scholarship again. The Latvian scholarship can be awarded not more than for two consecutive terms to one individual. In general, the academic year in Latvia lasts from September 1 to June 30.

What does it cover? The amount of the Latvian scholarship for bachelor and master students is EUR 500 per month and for PhD students is EUR 670 per month.

Notification: The list of accepted candidates will be published on the website of VIAA (English version) at the end of June 2014. All candidates will be informed personally about the results by e-mail.

How to Apply: Applicants should apply by post. Application dossiers for scholarships for studies at Latvian HEIs have to be sent directly to VIAA with the following exceptions: Lithuanian, Estonian, Czech, Hungarian and Polish candidates have to send the dossiers to the competent authorities of their countries. The following documents are necessary to apply for the Latvian scholarship for studies:
-Application form:
-Curriculum Vitae (applicants are asked to use the Europass CV form);
-Motivation letter;
-Certified photocopies of diplomas, including diploma supplements (shall be submitted if the candidate has completed previous studies) or a transcript of records (shall be submitted if studies are not finished yet);
-At least one letter of recommendation by academic staff dated not earlier than six months prior to the date of submission of the application;
-A letter of the relevant Latvian HEI confirming the possibility to study in the chosen study program (invitation letter). Please contact the International Relations Department/Unit or Foreign Students Department/Unit of the Latvian HEI directly;
-Certificate or other document certifying the language proficiency required for studies;
-Copy of passport or identity card.

Scholarship Application Deadline: The application deadline for study and research stays is 1st May 2014.
