Open Society Foundations / University of Cambridge Scholarships 2011-12

Offered in collaboration of the Open Society Foundation - London and the University of Cambridge, these scholarships enable students of outstanding academic merit to pursue one-year taught postgraduate courses of study at the University of Cambridge in subjects relevant to the needs of their countries.

1. Eligible Countries & Subjects

Eligible subjects/courses for Croatian citizens are:
MPhil in Development Studies, Education, Social Anthropology, Public Law

2. Eligibility

1. Applicants must be citizens of and resident in one of the following countries during the academic year in which they apply for the award: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. Applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident;

2. Applicants should be planning to return to their home country at the end of the period of study

3. Applicants must have completed at least three years of BA course (in the Bologna system) or four years of university study and have obtained, or expect to obtain, the appropriate degree(s) not later than September 2011

4. Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied outside of their home country

5. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional academic potential, familiarity with the chosen field of study and clear commitment to open society goals. This requirement will be treated as of considerable importance in the selection process, and applicants should be sure to complete Section B (6) of the Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF) fully and appropriately;

6. Applicants will be required to have passed an English proficiency test (TOEFL or IELTS) before being offered a Scholarship. The minimum requirement for some of the courses available is in TOEFL 600 (250 in the computer-based test) or IELTS 7.0; however most courses require the higher minimum requirement of IELTS 7.5, and some IELTS 8.0. Please refer to the University of Cambridge Graduate Studies Prospectus for further details.

Please note that if you have applied, or are applying, for other grants, fellowships or scholarships with the Open Society Foundations you should alert us to this in your application. While you may apply under more than one scheme simultaneously, you can be awarded only one Open Society Foundations scholarship or grant for a given period.

Employees, employees’ relatives (or former employees who have left employment less than two years before) of the Educational Advising Centers or local Open Society Foundations representations directly involved in the Open Society Foundations Scholarship Programs administration in the region and the participating universities will not be eligible to apply for these awards.

Please note that successful applicants will be invited to attend a pre-academic summer school that will be held in August 2011. The Open Society Scholarship Programmes’ Pre-Academic Summer School is designed to prepare the grantees for successful academic experiences in the UK. Successful applicants will be provided with the opportunity to refine their research and writing skills through intensive courses in academic writing and social sciences.


3. Application Process & Deadlines

All applicants must complete the Graduate Admission and Scholarship Application Form (GRADSAF) (including Graduate Application Cover and Packing List, Eligibility Requirements Self-Assessment Form and all required supporting documents) and return it to their local OSI scholarships administration centre (for Croatia: Institute for the Development of Education, Preradovićeva 33/I, 10000 Zagreb) by 19 November 2010.

Applicants are required to submit the appropriate number of copies of the application documents as stated in the Graduate Application Cover and Packing List.

Applicants shall check the requirements for individual courses as additional supporting materials such as written work might be needed.

Local representatives of Open Society Foundations will assist you by arranging for your application to be sent to Cambridge, and will also arrange for payment of the £35 application fee.

Scholars applying online or directly to the University will not be considered for a scholarship. Applicants should mention Open Society Foundations/ Cambridge Scholarships in the funding section of GRADSAF.


4. Selection Process

Applications for admission to the university will be considered by the Board of Graduate Studies (the graduate admitting authority of the University).
Short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview and an English language test in their home country in May 2011. You should keep yourself free around this time. You will be informed by your local scholarship coordinator in late April/early May 2011 whether you have been shortlisted or not.
The final awards will be decided jointly by the University and OSF-London. Candidates will be informed by the end of May/early June.

Please note that the staff at your local representative office is not involved in the decision-making process. They will tell you as soon as they can whether or not you have been successful. Please understand they will not be able to inform you until they have been told by the University of Cambridge and OSF-London.

6. Financial Terms
The scholarships will cover the University Composition Fee at the overseas rate, approved college fees, a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single student, and one return economy airfare to the UK. No financial support is provided for dependants or family members.
