Description
The European Master in Law and Economics (EMLE) has been recognized as an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course, both under the first edition of Erasmus Mundus (2004-2008) as under Erasmus Mundus II (2009-2013). The programme was very positively evaluated by a panel of independent academic experts and in the first round in 2004 it was chosen by the Selection Committee out of 128 proposals. In this first round only 19 Masters Programmes received the Erasmus Mundus label. The Master in Law and Economics is the only Masters Course in Economics and one of two Erasmus Mundus Courses in the legal discipline. In 2002 the EMLE Programme was already selected to take part in the Joint Masters Project of the European University Association.

The programme offers the opportunity for interdisciplinary studies of law and economics at two or even three European and non-European universities. Each partner university awards a Master degree. The programme provides students with an advanced understanding of the economic effects of divergent laws and prepares students for a professional career, for example, in public organizations, in multinational law firms or consultancy firms. Graduates are also well prepared for doctorate research in a PhD programme such as the European Doctorate in Law and Economics (EDLE).

The student will be able to study different countries like Belgium, Italy, India, Poland, France, Austria, Israel, Germany or the Netherlands. The universities participating in the EMLE programme are respectively in Ghent, Bologna, Mumbai, Warsaw, Aix-en-Provence, Vienna, Haifa, Hamburg and Rotterdam.

Eligibility
The minimum requirement for admission is a bachelor degree in law or economics. Applicants with a degree in business administration, social sciences or other relevant topics may also apply under the condition that the completed study programme includes a substantial number of courses in law and/or economics.

Students who have not yet graduated but who expect to graduate before July 2014 can also apply for admission to the EMLE programme. If such a student is selected for the programme, this is under the deferring condition that (s)he sends a copy of the diploma before mid-July 2014.

Scholarships
The scholarships differ depending on whether an applicant is considered ‘European student’ or ‘third country student’ in accordance with the following criteria. European students are those who either:

• have a passport of an EU Member State or of the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), or
• have carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

All applicants who are characterized by neither of the above conditions are considered as third country students. Each year a number of non-European students will receive a grant of € 24,000 per selected student.

The grant for European students amounts to € 10,000. From this grant, € 4,000 will be deducted for the tuition fees for European students (€ 1,500 of the tuition fee will be waived). The remaining € 6,000 will be paid in monthly installments. In addition, grantees who spend their third term at a non-European partner university, i.e. Haifa or Mumbai, will receive an additional € 3,000 in March, as a contribution to travel and relocation costs. The grant for these students thus amounts to € 13,000. Finally, the Consortium covers the grantees’ insurance costs.

Application
The deadline for the EMLE application is 31 December 2013. The procedure is organized in three steps:

• Collect necessary application documents (see HERE) and scan them.
• Apply online HERE and upload the application documents collected.
• Collect the admission documents (see HERE) that all successful applicants need to be admitted to the programme (these documents, including the TOEFL, can be provided until June/July 2014).
