INTERNATIONAL FULBRIGHT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARD FOR THE 2008-2009 ACADEMIC YEAR

The U.S. Embassy Zagreb is pleased to announce the opening of the 2008 International Fulbright Science and Technology Award - a worldwide competition for outstanding foreign students for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering.

The program is funded by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State. Approximately 25 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields.

Selected participants will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the following fields: 

  • aeronautics and astronomics / aeronautical engineering
  • earth and atmospheric sciences / meteorology 
  • astronomy / planetary sciences 
  • information sciences / engineering
  • biology
  • materials science / engineering
  • biomedical engineering
  • mathematics
  • chemistry
  • neuroscience
  • computer sciences / engineering 
  • brain and cognitive sciences
  • geology
  • oceanography
  • environmental science
  • physics engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean and petroleum)

Funding:

All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities, and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a Ph.D.

Placement:

Placement of students will be handled by a Fulbright cooperating agency. However, applicants may indicate placement preference.

Requirements:

  • Croatian citizenship
  • completed undergraduate degree before August 1, 2008
  • proficiency in English with a recent (not more than 2 years old) TOEFL score (iBT; or equivalent) of 580 or higher
  • GRE General Exam (quantitative score of at least 700)
  • completed application package

(Note, a GRE Subject Exam score report will also be needed for all selected candidates in the following fields of study: biology; biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; and physics.)

Application and selection procedures:

Each applicant will be required to submit an online application along with all supporting documents. Once submitted, U.S. Embassy Zagreb will review applications, interview and nominate 2 principal and 1 alternate finalists. Approved applications will then be forwarded to a U.S-based screening committee and the U.S. Foreign Scholarship Board for review and approval.

All applications, including references, undergo technical and academic reviews. Finalists will be notified of their status by October 15, 2007.

A complete application includes:

  • an online application which includes a clearly written research objective 
    and a professional resume
  • three letters of reference
  • official (or scanned and attached to the online application) academic transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended
  • English language test scores (when available)
  • GRE General and GRE subject exam test scores (when available)

Complete application package includes:

  • complete and mail printed copy of the on-line application, 3 letters of reference, and supplemental forms
  • undergraduate (and graduate) academic transcripts (in Croatian only)
  • xerox copy of university diploma(s) if already received (in Croatian only)
  • xerox copy of domovnica
