Fellowship for Intellectual Exchange 2008-2009
The Fellowship Program is designed to provide selected intellectuals in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa with an opportunity to visit Japan and conduct their own individual research on a chosen topic as well as networking/ exchange activities.

Fellowship
The fellows are required to start their fellowship within the period from July 20, 2008, to March 31, 2009. The duration of the fellowship must be more than 1 month and less than 2 months. Expected Number of Fellows is 15.
Contents of Fellowship Award
- Round-trip, discount economy-class air ticket (PEX).
- Allowance to cover accommodation, meals, local transportation, research expenses and other incidentals (17,000 Japanese yen per day).

Please note that the insurance coverage provided would be in accordance with the general guidelines as set forth by the Foundation. - The Japan Foundation will directly pay a supervisor fee (JPY 50,000) to the academic supervisor.
Application
Applicants should send the following documents at the Japanese Diplomatic Office by the 15th May 2008.
- Fully Completed Application Form (attached)
- Curriculum Vitae
- One Letter of Recommendation from applicant’s organization in their country
- List of publications (optional)
- Copies of letters, faxes, or e-mail messages from the institution or advisor in Japan with which applicants intend to affiliate themselves.
Eligibility of Applicants
- Scholars, researchers (except undergraduate and graduate students), journalists and professionals who are engaged in research activities in the fields of the humanities or the social sciences, or who have practical experience in research, media, or non-profit organizations. In this fellowship, the applicant’s specialization should not be Japanese studies, but he/she should aim to conduct research that is related to Japan.
- Individuals with adequate English-language proficiency to take part in collaborative interaction and to conduct research in Japan (Japanese-language ability is not assessed. Please attach a certificate showing the applicant’s English-language ability, if you have one.)
- Applicants who are under 45 years old, and who are nationals or permanent residents with an active academic/ professional affiliation in any of the countries including Croatia.
- Applicants who can find their own affiliated institutions and advisors in Japan.
- Japanese-language students, students of industry training courses, or students of courses in traditional culture (e.g., flower arranging, karate) are not eligible. Also, training for governmental officials will be excluded.
