Central European University’s Nationalism Studies Program

Description
Central European University is an English-language, graduate university located in Budapest, Hungary. With students from some 100 countries and faculty from more than 40, CEU offers an extraordinary student/faculty ratio of 8:1. CEU is accredited in the U.S. and Hungary.

CEU’s Nationalism Studies Program addresses issues of nationalism, self-determination, state formation, ethnic conflict, minority protection, language and citizenship rights, and constitutional design in modern and contemporary societies. It encourages critical and interdisciplinary approaches to the study of nationalism and provides students with a theoretical and methodological background in applied social sciences.

Programs Offered:

  • Master of Arts in Nationalism Studies (One Year)
  • Master of Arts in Nationalism Studies (Two Years)
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative History of Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe — Nationalism Studies Track

CEU is committed to attracting talented students from around the world—a commitment backed by generous financial aid. The University provides a variety of scholarships and research grants for which applicants from any country are eligible to apply.

Besides, Direct Student Loans and Canada Student Loans are available for eligible U.S. and Canadian students.

Eligibility
CEU wants to attract outstanding individuals irrespective of their financial situation.

  • Eligibility requirements for Master’s programs: Applicants must have a first degree from a recognized university or institution of higher education, or provide documentation indicating that they will earn such a first degree before enrolment in a CEU Master’s program. For its one-year US accredited Master’s programs, CEU normally accepts students who have completed four years of undergraduate university study. Applicants with a three-year Bachelor’s degree will be considered for two-year Master’s programs (both for those accredited in the US and in Hungary).
  • Eligibility requirements for doctoral programs: Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related field from a recognized university or institution of higher education, or provide documentation indicating that they will earn such a degree before enrolment in a CEU doctoral course of study. Students enrolled in a doctoral program at CEU must not be simultaneously enrolled in other institutions of higher education, and are required, at the beginning of their studies at CEU, to sign a declaration to this effect.

Scholarships
CEU Master’s Degree Fellowships include a full tuition scholarship (with a value of €11,000 to €12,000), housing in the CEU Residence Center, health insurance, and a monthly stipend to cover living expenses.

CEU Doctoral Fellowships cover full tuition, health insurance, and a generous stipend for housing and living expenses. Over 90 percent of PhD students receive the full doctoral fellowship.

Application
Candidates interested in applying for CEU Financial Aid should not forget to complete the Financial Aid section of the online application.

Financial Aid awards are determined at the end of the admissions process when departments complete their academic merit-ranking lists. The CEU Admissions Office matches these lists with Financial Aid selections submitted by applicants. Because the number of applicants eligible for admission is normally higher than the number of students to whom CEU can offer support, Financial Aid offers depend on an applicant’s place in the merit-ranking list. Applicants may be offered Financial Aid according to their first or second choice, or an alternative package resulting from their place in the merit-ranking list. Applicants unable to accept the alternative Financial Aid offer will be placed on a waiting list for their first or second choice.

January 23, 2014, 24:00 Pacific Standard Time (PST) is the application deadline for Master’s and PhD programs.
