The University of Iowa International Programs announces a new Post-Doctoral Fellowship in International Studies to be awarded to an outstanding scholar-teacher in the humanities, social sciences, or related professional fields such as Law, Global Health, or Business.

Our primary desired emphasis this year is on Middle Eastern or Islamic World Studies, and these applications will receive priority consideration. Exceptionally meritorious applications on other topics are also welcome.

The scholar will be hosted by the UI International Programs, home to 15 Centers and Programs, and to the interdisciplinary International Studies B.A. and M.A. degrees. For more information on these programs, please visit the International Studies

The Fellow will have a reduced teaching load to permit participation in the interdisciplinary academic activities of International Programs and across campus.

Duration: One year, renewable for a second year subject to performance review.

Eligibility: Must have Ph.D. in hand at time of application. The Ph.D. cannot have been received more than 5 years before the start date of the award. The degree must be in a field relevant to international studies, but need not be in international studies per se. For instance, scholars of literature, languages, foreign relations, global health, international law, geography, transnational feminisms, global change in the arts, and so on, as well as area studies specialists, are all invited to apply.

At least two years of relevant university-level teaching experience is required. As all classes will be taught in English, it is essential that the awardee be fluent in English.

Citizenship: U.S. citizenship is not required.

Number of awards: One award per year.

Stipend: The award carries an annual stipend of $40,000 plus health Insurance, and includes access to all university facilities, the provision of a computer, and workspace. An additional annual award of $1,500 in research/travel/ or moving support is provided. While the university does not provide housing, we will assist the fellow in
locating appropriate housing.

Duties: The Fellow will develop his/her scholarship, and make that scholarship available on campus through public presentations and events (at least one a semester), and through meetings with faculty colleagues and students. In addition, the Fellowship carries a limited teaching load: one course per semester on a topic related to the Fellow's expertise in the new, and highly popular, B.A. program in International Studies. It is anticipated that one of these courses will be a large, more introductory level course, and the second a more specialized upper level seminar.

The Fellow will counsel students in the International Studies major on relevant scholarly issues and post-graduation options in international studies, and, if appropriate, will supervise students' final capstone senior projects in her/his area of specialization. With the exception of limited brief travel to conferences, the Fellow is expected to be on-campus when classes are in session during the academic year as all faculty are.

Additional Benefits: If desired, the Fellow will be paired with an experienced scholar working in related areas who will provide professional mentoring and teaching advice. In addition, the outstanding UI Center for Teaching offers numerous workshops for both beginning and experienced instructors.

Application Procedure: Please send the following materials, which should be postmarked by APRIL 3, 2006. Review of applications will begin immediately.

1. A curriculum vitae.

2. A detailed statement of current research interests outlining the project you would undertake during the fellowship period and its relation to your previous work. (No more than 5 double spaced pages please).

3. A recent article in English in print or in press, or a writing sample of no more than 35 pages.

4. After reviewing the UI International Programs B.A. in International Studies website, please propose two courses that would enhance one of the major's emphasis areas or contribute to the "core" or "foundation" selections. Provide a brief course description and a course outline (or syllabus if you prefer) for each course, along with a brief statement (no more than two pages) of your teaching interests and philosophy. You should also indicate whether you have any previous experience in the U.S. higher education system as the ability to successfully teach our undergraduates is a prerequisite of the Fellowship.

5. Three letters of recommendation which comment on your scholarly work and the specific project you propose. In addition, they should comment on your teaching abilities and, if you are not a native English speaker, on your ability to teach in an English language classroom in the U.S. educational system which often emphasizes extensive discussion and student interaction in the classroom, multiple student writing assignments, and highly detailed course organization and syllabi. These letters must be postmarked by the date above and should be sent directly to the UI, not included with your own application materials. Please include a list of your recommenders and their contact information with your application so we can know when the appropriate letters have all arrived.

Only fully completed applications postmarked by the due date will be accepted. Finalists may be interviewed by phone.
