Description

Central European University’s summer school offers 19 high-level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary academic one- and two-week long courses as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development, taught by internationally renowned scholars and policy experts. Course offerings cater for the various needs of academic and professional development across a wide spectrum of disciplines. These include anthropology, environmental sciences, comparative religion, international relations, legal studies, media,medieval studies, philosophy, political science, public policy, sociology,etc. The program encourages topics in newly emerging fields and transdisciplinary approaches.
 

Course offering

Summer university courses cater for the various needs of academic and professional development in the social sciences and humanities across a wide spectrum of disciplines. These include anthropology, cognitive science, comparative religion, environmental sciences, gender studies, history, history and philosophy of science, international relations, cultural, legal, media and medieval studies, philosophy, political science, public policy, sociology, etc. The program encourages topics in newly emerging fields. Courses often tend to address currently relevant issues, such as ethnic relations, migration, nationalism and transnationalism, globalization, human rights, urban development, poverty reduction, integrity, religion and identity, and gender inequalities, among others. These issues are discussed in a general theoretical framework as well as embedded in the context of the actual countries/regions the participants come from.
 

Course format

Courses typically last two weeks, but one-week workshops can also be offered. Based on the CEU credit hour system, each course has a teaching load of 24 hours per week (one teaching hour is 50 minutes long).
 

Target audience

Summer university courses are primarily designed for MA and Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty, researchers, and professionals. The minimum enrollment for a course to be launched is 15 participants; however, we prefer an enrollment of 20-25 participants.
 

Fees and Costs

The participation costs for a two-week course at a subsidized CEU rate, excluding travel, are the following:

  • Tuition fee: 550 EUR
  • Accommodation: 220 EUR
  • Living expenses: 250 EUR
  • TOTAL: 1020 EUR

Financial aid for course participants

Financial aid is available in the following categories:

  • tuition waiver
  • accommodation grant
  • travel grant (full or partial)

All packages include the following:

  • tuition of 24 contact hours per week
  • a certificate of attendance
  • ECTS credit points where applicable
  • access to course E-learning page (with readings, assignments, etc.)
  • access to CEU facilities (Library, IT services, and, if you are housed in CEU’s Residence Center a sports centre including the use of the indoor swimming pool, tennis courts)
  • some social and cultural events (welcome and farewell reception, outings, fieldtrips, film screenings, etc.)

Package Types

1. Tuition Waiver
Financial aid: tuition fee waived
Participant’s contribution: health insurance, travel, accommodation and living expenses
2. Partial SUN Scholarship
Financial aid: tuition fee waived and free accommodation in a double room
Participant’s contribution: health insurance, travel and living expenses

3. Full SUN Scholarship
Financial aid: tuition fee waived; free accommodation in a double room and a full or partial travel grant.
Participant’s contribution: health insurance and living expenses.

The Full SUN Scholarship includes a full or partial travel grant which can be applied for on a competitive basis and will be available in a limited number. Visa costs and short domestic trips are not reimbursed. The citizens of the following countries are not eligible to apply for a travel grant: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and the western part of Ukraine and qualify therefore for a Partial SUN Scholarship.

Below is the list of the documents you need to prepare or arrange for submission:

  • Completed online SUN Application Form
  • Letter of recommendation
  • A full curriculum vitae or resume, including a list of publications, if any
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Course-specific further requirements as listed on the relevant course web sites (research proposal, writing sample, academic records if requested, etc.)
