DOCTORAL STUDY IN THE UNITED STATES
2007 INTERNATIONAL FULBRIGHT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING FOREIGN STUDENTS

(deadline for applications is JULY 25, 2006)

We are pleased to announce a new International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for outstanding foreign students for PhD study at top U.S. institutions in science, technology, or engineering.  The program is funded by the Educational and Cultural Affairs Office of the U.S. Department of State.  Approximately 25 awards will be competed worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. 

PROGRAM DESIGN
Selected participants will be enrolled for PhD study at top U.S. universities in the following fields:

  • Aeronautics and Astronomics/Aeronautical Engineering
  • Astronomy/Planetary Sciences
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Sciences/Engineering
  • Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
  • Environmental Science/Engineering,
  • Geology/Earth and Atmospheric Sciences
  • Information Sciences/Engineering
  • Materials Science/Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Oceanography
  • Physics

FUNDING
All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities.

After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining expenses toward completion of a PhD.

PLACEMENT of students will be handled by a Fulbright cooperating agency. However, applicants may indicate placement preference.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

  • Croatian citizenship and permanent residency in Croatia
  • university undergraduate degree (U.S. equivalent to bachelor of science), or graduate degree (master’s) awarded by December 31, 2006
  • proficiency in English
  • academic excellence during undergraduate and graduate studies

APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURES
Each applicant will be required to submit an online application. Once submitted, American Embassy Zagreb will review applications, interview and nominate 2 finalists. 

Approved applications will then be forwarded to a U.S-based screening committee and the U.S. Foreign Scholarship Board for review and approval.

All applications, including references, undergo technical and academic reviews. Candidates who satisfy all requirements will be interviewed in early September. Finalists will be notified of their status by November 2006.

COMPLETE APPLICATION PACKAGE INCLUDES

  • complete and mail a printed copy of the on-line application, 3 letters of reference, and supplemental forms
  • undergraduate (and graduate) academic transcripts (in Croatian only)
  • xerox copy of university diploma(s) if already received (in Croatian only)
  • xerox copy of domovnica

Finalists will be required to take TOEFL test scheduled for September 23. Selected candidates will be required to take general GRE, and GRE Subject exams.
