OCCAM Visiting Studentships and Visiting Postdoctoral Research Assistantships (OVS/Ps)

Vacancy Reference: BK/11/003 - 006

Applications are invited from talented doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in Applied and Computational Mathematics for Visiting Studentships and Postdoctoral Research Assistantships (PDRAs) at the Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM); http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/occam. The Centre has been established as the result of a substantial grant from the Global Research Partnership of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). The Centre's strategic vision is to be a world-class research centre in problem-solving mathematics allied to a global network designed to enable the best mathematical expertise to be brought to bear on the world's problems.

OCCAM is engaged in a wide range of collaborative applied and computational mathematics projects under the broad headings of Methodologies (M); Resources, Energy and Environment (REE); Biosciences and Bioengineering (BB); Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). In the academic year 2010/11, OCCAM teams will be focusing on the following projects:

  • (M) Adaptive spectral methods in 1D and 2D; Reaction and steric effects in stochastic models of drift diffusion; Closest point finite element method for numerical computing on surfaces; The numerical linear algebra of approximation involving radial basis functions; Multiscale methods based on unstructured data; Multiscale Modelling in Liquid Crystal Science; Chemical Fokker-Planck equation and multiscale modelling of (bio)chemical systems; Stochastic modelling of reaction-diffusion processes; Numerical Fluid Flow on Dynamic Implicit Surfaces.
  • (REE) Lattice Boltzmann methods for multiphase flow in porous media with applications to CO2 sequestration; Solvers for petroleum reservoir simulation; Stochastic differential equations for oilfield history matching; Uncertainty analysis of regional and global climate forecasts; Current generation in polymeric photovoltaic cell; Two-fluid modelling of large-scale rotation and internal transport barriers in tokamaks; Local adaptive timestepping for multiphase flow in porous media; Solar Energy: Organic Photovoltaics; Modelling and Predicting Climate Change.
  • (BB) Mathematical modelling of plant crop growth in stressed environments; Tear film dynamics; Multiscale Modelling and Simulation for the Life Sciences: coupling the plasma membrane with the cytosol; The role of hyperactivated motility and fluid mechanics in human fertility; Mathematical modelling of self-propelled cell motion on biomaterial surfaces; Developing a novel mathematical model of coronary blood flow in the heart; Mathematical modelling of ion channels; Mathematical models of spatially coherent brain states; Mathematical modelling of growth in physical and biological systems; Mathematical modelling of mRNA transport and its role in learning and memory; Gene transcription: investigation of interactions between DNA, cohesin complex and mRNA polymerase; Understanding collective behaviour of systems of interacting particles; Morphoelastic rods: the growth and mechanics of biological filaments; Wave phenomena in neural field models of visual cortex and the role of short term plasticity; Mathematical modelling of protein transport and signalling at synapses
  • (MSE) Discrete and continuum dislocation modelling; Modelling ionic-surfactant-driven flows; Computational electrochemistry; Mathematical modelling of drying colloidal suspensions; Interface dynamics for two-layer liquid films in the context of organic solar cells; New mathematical models of splash dynamics in water entry; Hierarchical scaling, structure, and mechanics of filamentary assemblies.

These visiting positions bring talented doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers from around the world to Oxford, in order to bring OCCAM’s expertise to bear on their current research problems. OVS/Ps also have the opportunity to interact with our teams and are encouraged to participate in OCCAM’s workshops and in European Study Groups with Industry, where appropriate. We especially encourage candidates whose research is aligned with one of our existing projects to apply.

OVS/Ps will be reimbursed (upon presentation of receipts) travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses for their visit. The positions will be for up to 3 months duration. Applications will be considered three times a year; the next two deadlines are 1 June 2011 (BK/11/005) and 1 Oct 2011 (BK/11/006). Applications well in advance of the proposed visit are welcome. Please note that applicants for OVSs must be undertaking their doctoral studies at the time of their visit. Similarly, visits by OVPs must take place while the PDRA is still employed by the same institution as at the time of the application and still working on the same research project.

Informal enquiries are welcome addressed to the Project Manager, occam-manager@maths.ox.ac.uk. Further particulars are available at http://www.maths.ox.ac.uk/notices/vacancies/  or may be obtained from vacancies@maths.ox.ac.uk.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae, list of publications, a short research plan including how the applicant’s research project at their home institution will benefit from a period of time spent in Oxford, & who at Oxford would be an appropriate supervisor. Applicants should also provide an indication of how they will become involved in, and contribute to, research in OCCAM, in particular in relation to the areas set out in the further particulars. Cover letters must include the proposed dates of visits and confirmation of your right to work in the UK (or intent to apply). Please quote the BK number for the appropriate closing date.

Applications, and the names and addresses of 2 referees, should be sent to The Administrative Assistant (Vacancies), Mathematical Institute, 24-29 St Giles', Oxford, OX1 3LB by the appropriate closing date (email applications are acceptable). Applicants must arrange for their referees to send references directly to the Administrative Assistant by the same date (fax or email is sufficient). We will not hold interviews for these positions.

Committed to equality and valuing diversity
